What are parabens?
What are parabens?
Parabens are preservatives used to keep health and beauty products fresh by preventing the growth of harmful bacteria. These compounds are amongst the most commonly used cosmetic preservatives in the world and have a long history of safe use.

Parabens are the most common preservative used in food and cosmetics. They have been extensively studied and determined to be safe for usage in personal care products by expert scientific panels and governmental regulatory agencies. None of the extensive research carried out on parabens has indicated a potential risk of harm to human health and parabens remain amongst the safest of preservatives in today’s cosmetic products. Parabens are also naturally occurring in many foods that we enjoy as part of a healthy lifestyle. These include cucumbers, carrots, onions, blueberries and cherries. Health Canada allows methylparaben as a preservative in foods and cosmetics and references United States and European regulations to support the safe use of methylparaben as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products. Health Canada is a federal organization responsible for maintaining and improving Canadian’s health by ensuring the safety and efficacy of products including consumer, drug and health products. Other independent groups, the American Cancer Society, the FDA, and Cancer Research Centers, have looked for many different causes for cancer but have never found any evidence of risk from parabens.
What are sulfates?
What are sulfates?
Sulfates are commonly used as surfactants that provide cleansing by trapping dirt and oils so that they can be rinsed away with water. They are the ingredient that creates the foamy lather you get when you brush your teeth or wash your hair or face. In rare cases, certain sulfates can irritate some skin types, which is why you might have heard or read about an increase in sulfate-free products.

Not all sulfates are created equal. Through our research, we identified mild sulphates (“ethoxylated sulphates”) that are powerfully effective, yet gentle. We use SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) in our products. It is a surfactant which creates lather and gives that ‘clean feel’, often confused with SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), which is known to cause irritation. SLES is a milder surfactant than SLS and is more suitable for beauty products as it’s kinder to skin.
Contrary to some Internet rumors, sulfates are proven to be safe and effective.
What are silicones?
What are silicones?
Silicones are derived from silica, one of the most common elements in the earth’s crust and has been taming hair for nearly 50 years.

There are hundreds of different types of silicones that deliver various benefits for hair. Silicones work by forming a microscopically thin and flexible coating on hair that creates a barrier against frizz and humidity, and locks in moisture when applied to wet or damp hair. Some of our formulas include silicones to smooth frizz, add softness and shine, provide colour protection, detangle, reduce fly-aways, and to seal split ends. The types of silicone used in our formulas are never drying and, when used properly, do not create unwanted heaviness. They are easily removed by shampooing, and do not build up on nor harm hair. This multitasking ingredient moisturizes and smoothes hair and helps protect it from the damage of heat styling, to leave it silkier, more lustrous, and more manageable.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ALCOHOL IN BEAUTY CARE?
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ALCOHOL IN BEAUTY CARE?
Household alcohol is a universal, commonly used ingredient to dissolve and combine other materials consistently. When used properly in formulations like ours, any alcohol present is too low to have impact on the condition of your hair.

In hair care products, we also use so-called “longchain” alcohols, such as cetearyl alcohol. These types of alcohols condition hair and improve the thickness of product formulas to provide stability.
WHAT ARE PHTHALATES
WHAT ARE PHTHALATES
Phthalates are a group of materials that were historically used in cosmetics for three purposes: to improve fragrance performance, improve longevity of films such as nail polishes and hairsprays, and as a denaturant in alcohol to help prevent accidental ingestion by children.

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), an independent scientific committee to the European Commission, published a favorable opinion of phthalates used in cosmetic products. They concluded that although there is no data available to demonstrate an association between phthalates in cosmetics and health risks, they have been measured within urine. Overall, the personal care industry has vastly decreased inclusion of phthalates in cosmetic products and John Frieda® products do not contain phthalates in our formulas or fragrances.
our fragrance philosophy
Our fragrance philosophy places great importance on research, analysis, assessment and transparency. Our in-house team of experts is dedicated to creating fragrances that can be enjoyed safely. That’s why our formulations are compliant and backed by safety data and meet the guidelines of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).
our product safety
We set the highest standards to ensure every material and finished formula not only meets industry standards for purity, quality and performance, but that we constantly evaluate and refine our formulas based on emerging science to ensure they are safe for your hair and safe for the environment.
ANIMAL WELFARE
We know you love animals and so do we! That’s why all the John Frieda® products are cruelty-free. We do not test our products or the materials within them on animals. We follow the conventions of the EU and other governmental bans on animal testing for cosmetics. Occasionally, laws and regulations require testing of materials outside of the cosmetics category.
