Styling Tips for Thin Hair

Having fine hair isn’t your fault. It’s likely a roll of the genetic dice that graced you with strands that are small in diameter and quick to lose shape. But despite genetics, you can get gorgeous, voluminous locks. Here’s how.

1. Use Volumizing Shampoos and Conditioners.

Some shampoos and conditioners can weigh hair down—especially if you apply conditioner too close to your roots. Add some volume into thin strands with a weightless shampoo and volumizing conditioner specially formulated for fine hair. When you condition, focus on the ends to mid-shaft to avoid scalp buildup and greasy hair. You can even use a leave-in conditioning mist to help.

2. Dry Shampoo to Keep Greasiness at Bay.

Thin hair often appears more oily than thicker hair. That’s because the scalp’s oils can travel down a fine hair follicle easier. Dry shampoo absorbs excess oil, reviving day 2 hair. Bonus—the powders and starch in dry shampoo add texture and volume too!

 3. Try a Lightweight Mousse.

Give limp locks some oomph with a volumizing mousse. Work a dollop of mousse into towel-dried hair from the ends up for bouncy, touchable volume.

4. Blow Dry to Lift Your Roots.

Flip your head upside down and blow dry, raking your fingers through your mane as you go. This roughs up the cuticle, creating more volume. When your hair is nearly dry, flip your hair back over and use a round brush to smooth your style.

5. Use a Heat-Activated Blow-Out Spray.

Create even more lift when you blow-dry with a volumizing blow-out spray. Blow-out spray is specially formulated for thin, fine hair, adding touchable, root-to-tip body that lasts all day long.

6. Boost Roots With a Thickening Spray.

A root-lifting spray can boost roots and thicken your strands for natural-looking, natural-feeling volume that lasts.

7. Add Body With Rollers.

Boost lifeless locks by sectioning off hair at the crown and rolling it up in curling rollers. Set the style with your blow-dryer on cool, and spray all over with a lightweight, volumizing hairspray—even at the roots. If your style starts to fall midday, simply flip your hair over and massage your scalp to fluff it back up.

8. Don't Over-Brush.

Thin, fine strands are easily damaged. Too much brushing can not only cause breakage, but it can also flatten out your style, making fine hair appear even more limp.
